We've established 312, but there are many more. Black can mate white on move 3 (instead of two) how many ways?
Originally posted by BigDoggProblemThere are many permutations of 1.Nc3 Nc6 2.f3 e6 3.g4 Qh4# that raise the number of mates before the fourth move to something over 500, I would guess.

Originally posted by WulebgrOh, sorry, just noticed you changed it to Black mating on move 3. That gets pretty hairy, because stuff like 1.e3 Nc6 2.Ne2 Ne5 3.g3 Nf3# works.

Originally posted by BigDoggProblemYes, such smother mates will add a handful to the Fool's mates. Stilll, it might be nice to have a number. We must be pushing close to 600 by now.

Originally posted by Joe BannanaOne mate I played when I was 7.
I have found out a different 4 move checkmate, KP up 2, bishop to B5, Queen to F3, queen checkmate. It's less obvious
1. e4 e5
2. Qh5 Ke2
3. Qxe5#
This was at the time when I expected my opponent to play g3, and then I would win a rook with qxe5+
