Originally posted by YUG0slavThe book I started out with was "Weapons of Chess" by bruce pandolfini... it probably wasn't the best one out there for a beginner because it doesn't say much about tactics and tactics will decide most games. Beside that, the book had some great info on how to analyze positions and how to find and/or create long-term weaknesses in your opponents camp.
Bobby Fischer teaches chess is a bit biased imo (and also according to Kasparov) an example is that he blatantly states that a Knight is worth 3 pawns and and that a Bishop is worth 3.25 pawns (he always favored bishops over knights, particularly the light squared bish)
I would recommend Silman's "How to Reassess your Chess" along with a good book of tactics.
where's those darned getting to 1400 and 1600 threads?
Here is a good site for tactics! http://www.chesstactics.org/
