Against Alekhine's Knight, (1. Nf6) I have recently found 2. Bc4, allowing Black to pick up the e-pawn... apparently.
1. e4 Nf6
2. Bc4 Nxe4
3. Bxf7+ Kxf7
4. Qh5+ Kg8 (for example; many other variations but none save the knight)
5. Qd5+ picks up the knight.
I read in an opening book somewhere that the following variation is at least equal for Black: 1 e4 Nf6 2 Bc4 Nxe4 3 Bxf7+ Kxf7 4 Qh5+ Kg8 5 Qd5+ d6 6 Qxe4 c5.

All seriousness aside (as the late great Steve Allen used to say), GM Joel Benjamin successfully played the above variation in the 1990's (from the 1 d4 d6 2 c4 e5 move order). He wrote a series of articles in Chess Life at that time recommending 1...d6 against both 1 e4 and 1 d4.
Edit: A farily recent book called An Explosive Chess Opening Repertoire for Black by GM Jouni Yjola and IM Jussi Tella recommends 1...d6 against any first move by White.
Another edit: I apologize for being a co-conspirator in the highjacking of this thread, which was supposed to be about the Alekhine's Defense. Sorry.

As for the line by the previous poster, the position is balanced but i think white has more possibilities with his knights moving from the center to the kingside.

c4 d6
d4 e5
dxe5 is pretty strong, isn't it?
Originally posted by DagamoStyleYes, OK. But I personally like the variation because I think it is +- or == in the opening- and you'd certainly be surprised, I think, at how many players take on e4 immediately without looking ahead.
Ater the opening move 1.e4 Nf6 2.Bc4 white should be aware of that black can answer with the active move of 2.... d5. Blacks position is ok.
Originally posted by gaychessplayerI suppose. Generally though, with an enemy Kd8, 0-0-0 can be violent, particularly if bishops and knights become involved. It can be defended, but I would say initiative definitely rests in the hands of White.
The position after 1 c4 d6 2 d4 e5 3 dxe5 dxe5 4 Qxd8+ Kxd8 is probably about even according to GM's Soltis and Benjamin. I don't think that 3 dxe5 is the main line.
Originally posted by ZweiteBlack should usually play c7-c6 and Kd8-c7 ASAP. Black's king should be safe from would-be marauders and the endgame is probably not worse for him.
