I loved both of Silman's books!! Other books I like to use are...
- Yasser Sierawan's 'Play Winning Chess' Series
'Tactics'
'Strategies'
'Openings'
BUT NOT 'Endings'
Jeremy Silman actually co-wrote some of Sierawan's books.
- Any Pandolfini 'Chessercize' type of book
- Tony Kosten's 'Dynamic English'
- Edmar Mednis' 'Practical Rook Endings'
- Vukovic's 'Art of Attack' (Awesome)
- 'Think like a Grandmaster'
- John Walker's '64 Things you need to know in Chess'
- Chris Ward's 'Improve Your Opening Play'
- NOT Hans Kmoch's 'Pawn Power in Chess' (He makes up too many weird names for pawns and it is a hard read)
I'm 2/3's the way through Amateur's Mind and am totally blown away by it http://www.redhotpawn.com/images/forums/sml-grin.gif
The chess material by itself is fantastic, but the stuff about mental discipline and toughness, for me, was virtually life-transforming.
Also, I think it's extremely helpful the way Silman goes through the same position with several different students.
And yeah, I'd definitely reccommend taking the Silman books in the order suggested above; it's good advice http://www.redhotpawn.com/images/forums/sml-norm.gif

I had understood that Art of Attack was out of print... I'll look for it again. I've been away from the game for five years but still remember reading Reassess and gaining a better understanding of various imbalances in the game. Can't underestimate My System, though... still one of the best books in the biz.
Vukovic made an original copy and then Nunn remade it with Algebraic Notation, corrected some incorrect lines or typos, and made it better. Great book! A knowledge of general tactics is needed or you're gonna be lost! It definitely helps your attacking game though! I have had many good games after reading this book! ChessNut should know that! 😀 Just kidding man! You played a great game!
Good idea... the MCO 14th! As to 'How to Reassess your Chess' I must repeat my last year's post. I had bought the How to Reassess..., The Amateur's Mind + How to Reassess... - Workbook'. Since I was a bit at a loss as to how and in which order to study these books, I mailed Mr Silman. He replied this (rather strangely)...
1. How to Reassess... upto page 28
2. The Amateur's Mind (completely)
3. Then continue the How to Reassess... (the rest of it)
4. How to Reassess... - Workbook
Yup! That's what Mr silman wrote to me.
Originally posted by legionnaireSorry for late reply. I've started my chess study anew. I'll explain a little tiny bit... I've been through some serious personal, family, mental & physical probs. Feeling a bit better now, I have to start all over again. Which is not at all easy! But the Hunger for Chess (and other things in life) is slowly growing. Still, Silman is of great help. I can read positions better, but I can't -and will not!- lose my perpetual touch of chess blindness now and again. Particularly OTB. I haven't been at my local chessclub for many months now. Must pick up that thread also.
I just purchased Reassess your Chess as well. I was wondering if you could update us with your progress through the book, and whether it's helped your game, Jan.
Thanks,
-mike
Cheerio lasses & lads!
