I know among the answers I'm going to get here are going to include ones like, "It depends on the position."
I read or heard somewhere something like if pieces ahead trade pawns, and if pawns ahead trade pieces. Two questions: is my faulty memory correct about the saying, and is this generally true?
Thanks!

I have hears that. The question is if you eant to get to the end game. If you have the extra pawn, then head to the end game.
If you are ahead a piece cement your position by getting rid of the pawns that could be promoted.
At least that is how I viewed it.
Probably the best advice but least used by me anyhow...
See a good move, look for a better move.
@lemondrop saidOn red hot pawn, if your position is hopeless play as slowly as possible.
if your position is hopeless offer a draw
@jayboman1579 saidYe should really buy the book "...Chess - Words Of Wisdom..." The strap line reads as follows, "..the principles, methods and essential knowledge of Chess.." It is written by Mike Henebry. The back page review has the following line included - "..Chess Words Of Wisdom is unique in that it is all text. There are no diagrams or analysis at all in the book. There is not one single game in the entire book ! Instead, the book is jam packed with the essential chess knowledge..." Its worth a look on Amazon - you will not regret buying this one . . .
