Originally posted by Mutt n StuI bought this book some time ago because of recommendations. I would say it is for the intermediate-advanced club player. Around the same level as for Vukovic's Art of Attack in Chess.
Martin Weteschnik: Understanding Chess Tactics
In other words a little bit beyond me!
Better tactics books for lower intermediates that I've read from cover-to-cover in my opinion are, in this order:
1) Back to Basics: Tactics by Heisman
2) Learn Chess tactics by Nunn
3) Winning chess Tactics by Seirawan
Originally posted by SquelchbelchYou could add Polgar's 'Chess Tactics for Champions' to this list.

Edit: It would be a good one to go to after the other three, as it's just a bit more advanced than those. She goes into explaining *why* you make the move instead of just giving the answer.
Originally posted by magnublmI don't feel that a tactics book lends itself well to book club puposes. For the most part, they will introduce a tactical element and drill you on it. This is, of course, a very important part of chess improvement, but is not enhanced by cooperative study.
