Things that have tripped me up recently:
Don't forget which direction your pawns and your opponent's pawns move. It's obvious to me in the opening and middle game, but as pieces leave the board I occasionally make this mistake.
Don't forget to count two squares for an initial pawn advance. This has caught me again in endgames.
Don't forget that an undefended piece makes a poor attacker (of a piece that can move the same way). This has caught me too many times to count. Usually, I think "Great! I can attack his Queen with my Rook, and the Queen will be forced to move." and the Queen, forced to move, captures my Rook.
Don't ignore mate threats. One of my biggest troubles. I see an attacking line that looks good and I follow it, without considering that mate can interfere with my plans.
its been said before a million times, bt do not play chess when drunk. sorry to paultopia for my drunken chessboard antics the other day (tho im sure that opening has more potential than that game wd suggest 😉

Edit: I can see it coming ...
You know it wouldn't be that bad an idea...
She might die from laughter, therefore giving one a simple
victory.
If one could keep from dying of shame...
