This book has long been on my list of chess books to read, however it's been out of print for ages and costs a fortune second hand:

Edward Labate has now had the book reprinted:

This is obviously a bit more affordable than £110, but before I splash out on it I was wondering if anyone here ha ...[text shortened]... y of "Chess Tactics for Advanced Players", and if so whether it deserves its good reputation?

I actually have The Collected Games of Theophilus Thompson.
He was a vicar who self published.
The Short Book I've heard about and have seen a PDF file that stopped
short (a pun!) when it was clear he was not going to win it.
OK deal - we will PM address's
Maybe that's an idea for the site - a swap shop forum where people
trade chess books.
I'll swap four chess books and a chess set (pawn missing) for
The Weaver's Engine 😉

CT ART is ugly and runs slowly on my PC, but not having to set up positions manually is a huge blessing.

I have the chess digest edition. It is rather small but 326 pages thick.
Mr.Labate says that he made the text larger.
It is a pretty advanced text.
There are pages and pages of complicated to move diagrams. In addition, there is text explaining the themes/what is going on.
Naturally, many of the positions are taken from actual games.

Originally posted by Fat LadyI own a copy (Chess Digest version) of this book and I agree that it does deserve its good reputation, though I would not put it in the category of "all time classics". However, if money is a factor, then (IMO) you might actually derive greater benefit from "How to Calculate Chess Tactics" by Valeri Beim. Here are links to a couple of reviews of that book:

The chessville review is highly favorable. Not uncharacteristically, Silman indulges in a fair amount of self-promotion in his review, but ultimately, it is favorable as well.
Incidentally, if any (U.S.A. only) RHP forum member is interested in purchasing my copy of "Chess Tactics for Advanced Players", send me a PM. I would be willing to sell it for somewhat less than the lowest listed price on Amazon.
