Originally posted by Mister MeanerWhen ever I tell people from my club I play CC, they shrug and think it's garbage and then I tell them we aren't allowed computer help and they are like O, wow great!
The 17th World Correspondence Chess Champion Ivar Bern (an OTB IM) used computer assistance to win the world title. You can see a picture of him doing so in front of Fritz in the ICCF webzine at

ICCF say it is not possible to prevent computer use so they don't ban it. Result - almost everyone does.
So generally people now days think CC = Computer prog, db, books.
Is there an online site similar to Rhp where you can use computer help to play the CC games? It would be fun, like freestyle chess on playchess.
Originally posted by wormwoodI played in the Golden Knights tournament for the USCF. That 1724 rating is legitimate, USCF sanctioned. But, I could have gotten it better if I had just used books like those guys do. I just don't really have time to research the very best, best move even when I play correspondence chess. I just think long and hard about the best move I personally would make if that OTB position was in front of me, you know?
why do you think playing uscf cc somehow prevents people from cheating? it doesn't.
-if you played 2000+ people here, it could be possible you'd come across a cheater. but you don't.
-if you played a 2000+ engine user, it would not affect your rating in any different way than playing a non-cheater of similar strength!
-somebody not resigning 1700 to me, although they've gotten distinctly better since two to three months or so.

Originally posted by Freddie2006Well, I can't say I've never lied. I mean, I'm a human being. Like, if you go to a job interview, and you have like 10 kids, and they ask you if you have children, and you say, "Oh, I have one or two." See, you've lied. But, you know that you won't be bringing all your kids to work, and if they see how many kids later at a business party or something, then you can say, "Oh, I was just joking... I meant one or two... because I have actually ten." However, it won't affect your job, because you already have passed your 90 day preliminary and they can't fire you. That is the type of lie that I might have told before. Small white lies. But, I'm saying if a man asked me a straight forward question about my educational background, or my life, or anything - if I think it's his business - I'll tell him the truth. If he asks me what my USCF correspondence rating is, I'll tell him the truth even though he could have looked it up on the uschess.org if he had my ID. I'm just saying I try not to lie, and I try not to sin, because I try to live like God wants me to. THat's all I'm saying. Who is Woodley anyway? NEver heard of him.
James Woodley didn't lie either.
Originally posted by wormwoodOh, if you were to say, what would you think my rating is according to you examination of my play? I've had some bad games, but I've had some good ones, too. Some of those bad games have come from playing too quickly, when I had to use the library in Oregon. But, now that I'm in Hawaii, I should get a better showing on RHP.

registration fee? Is that the postal one you were talking about? Any ideas when the online thing will be done?
The Webchess link is at the top of the page.
I'm not certain what the requirements for membership are. I believe that you must join through your national or regional affiliate. I imagine there are entry fees for all their events.
Originally posted by WulebgrI'll pass then. Better for me to spend that money in otb fees.

Originally posted by powershakeroh, I missed this one yesterday. -to me, your games look like around 1500. meaning 1500-1599, which fits exactly your rating graph. that little bumb at 1600+ means nothing if you can't maintain it.
Oh, if you were to say, what would you think my rating is according to you examination of my play? I've had some bad games, but I've had some good ones, too. -playing bad moves fast is no excuse. the fact that you play bad moves fast IS what it's to be a 1500. I don't think it was because of that library-thing, I think you're just rationalizing a bad habit to yourself. until you teach yourself out of this habit, I doubt you'll reach much more than 1600 here. bad moves will be caught because of the long time-controls, and games will be lost.
also your openings are not reasonable. which is not that bad against other players on our level, less than a pawn of disadvantage, but you'll hardly see such openings at 1700+ rhp. oh, how I would like to comment on a game in progress now! 🙂
all this said as a fellow player strugling to get over 1600, so I hope you don't take it the wrong way. I'm just trying to give an honest opinion.
