I believe we were both provisional, but I had won my first couple, while my opponent had lost a couple. He's about 1130 now.

Your toughest game so far has been Game 1537381, and that opponent will drag down many provisional ratings. Don't worry about your provisional rating: it means nothing.

Thanks for your encouraging words.

The issue however is the Rating Formula (see above post by zanussi).

As I wrote, I'm having "problems" with the formula usage in RHP.

For example - from your post:
===================
Event 1--
opponent's rating/result
2401 / loss
2323 / loss
2296 / loss
2189 / loss
2250 / loss

This player gains an initial provisional rating of 1892.
===================================

=> Sorry but this is NOT the case.
If you are rated, say 1000, and play against all the above and Lose all your games - your new rating is still 1000 (rounded a bit to yield an integer rating).

I know this because I calculated several ELO tables few years ago, not over the Internet (formal FIDE rating for team league games).

Even when you round the figures a bit (according to some simple rule, since again, rating must be integer) there is NO way (using the formal ELO formula) to gain points from a loss, I repeat: NO WAY!.

thats what's bothering me as a (somewhat) nit-picker.

That's why I asked for a detailed example to see it in action, maybe I can learn how exactly the rating is calculated in RHP.

Until you complete 20 games, you will have a provisional rating. This rating is calculated as the average of all the games you have played. Each game is scored as being your opponent's rating (for a draw), your opponent's rating plus 400 (for a win), or your opponent's rating minus 400 (for a loss). If your opponent is also on a provisional rating, then the 400s above become 200s. If your opponent has played fewer than five games then their rating is treated as 1200 when calculating your rating.

Provisional ratings are not calculated by the full formula, but as zanussi indicated, which was copied from http://www.redhotpawn.com/help/index.php?help=faq

This system at RHP is comparable the the one in use by the USCF.
For an example of how this works in practice, look at the rating history of the infamous Michael de la Maza, author of a much celebrated and much despised book. In his third standard rated event, he lost 3 and won 1, gaining 81 rating points. I submit that the gain is not solely from a win (in the formula wins are capped at 32). provisional rating is an average on your opponents ratings +- 400 (or +-200 if they also are provisional) for win/loss. if you win a player that is more than 400 below your current provisional rating, your rating will drop.

EDIT: oh, I see wulebgr already said this...

EDIT2: er.. that is zanussi. I really should learn how to read one of these days...

Thanks.
