thank you....i read that i should solve from the book...
I just wanted re-assurance.
next question.....how do i convert that new calculation ability and convert it to OTB play?
After you do all those tactics, you will just have a sense that a tactic might be available in your game.
Signs that a tactic might be there are:
Exposed Kings, hanging pieces, and if you see an overworked peice - If something is protecting 2 or more things. Like sometimes queen's protect a bishop and rook at the same time.
Those are the big signs.
After you think there is a tactic there, relax take your time and start calculating. If I do this he will do this then I will do_____etc....
This is my recommendation for solving: Solve the puzzles directly out of the book. When you get to a puzzle that stumps you and you still cannot get it after 10 minutes of study, set the position up on a board. Heres the crux: set the postion up from memory, do not look untill you think you have it right. You will see massive improvement in tactics and visualazation. cheers

But after i set the position up from memory ...can i go to the arcade?..
Or do I have to solve it?

That being said, I can confirm that doing tactics puzzles regularly (out of the book, in your head) definitely does improve your OTB vision. I don't hit the books very often, but when I do there is a remarkable difference in my play. One thing I'd like to add for what it's worth is that when you get stumped on a position, go ahead and look up the solution. But here's the key, once you get the solution, analyze it and try to figure out what feature of the position made the combination possible (ie exposed kings, hanging pieces, overworked pieces, etc like Rahim was referring to).
It happens naturally.
