I think the forums need a major reworking - and so does the FAQ.
It would be nice if RHP had a "proper" forum, I.e, something like vbullitin
(http://www.vbulletin.com/)
If 'we' did, then perhaps they would have more use.
failing that, perhaps a far more simple (and perhaps more effective) idea would be to spilt the "only chess" forum into 2 tiers, "beginer", and "advanced"...
in the beginner section you have the few obvoius stickies (rhp rating, how to checkmate, etc) and the rest of the space dedicated to whatever anyone posts.
the "advanced" tier would be space left for the interesting discussions. --- and of course, if some n00b question gets in, mods simply just move it to the beginners section....
seems simple enough to me.

Oh get a grip all of you. It's because of your snooty attitude that chess is seen by most as a wierd geeky sport. We should be bringing it to the masses!
Not going "Oh dear you idiot, who doesn't spend all day studyin chess and have a ranking of 1800, you may as well not bother".
Is there really such an attitude in the masses?
Not where I'm from, anyway.
Most people I know can't even play chess, and don't want to learn.
Personally I think it's great mental exercise, and if people who are new to it want to play just for that reason, you should be welcoming it!
Not moaning at them for not being grandmasters after three games.
No wonder only Russia ever produces any champions.
Originally posted by hammertime217You miss the point. Anybody can play chess, and I don't even care if you're bad at the game. But have the basic intelligence to post a coherent useful comment - 90% of the crap on here doesn't fit either of those terms.

Originally posted by BedlamPart of the problem is that a lot of the better players have no time for ANY of the forums, because of what they see elsewhere.
Is it just me or is the chess forum starting to get dumbed down? Iv stopped reading most of the posts these days since 90% of them seem to be none pawn stars asking the most simple of questions.
I think everyone would accept the general forum, and the clan forum, are places where people can have a laugh; but some of the stuff in the debates forum is simply disgraceful.
Originally posted by hammertime217Anyone who reached 1800 probably started off at 1000-1300 odd and worked their way up so I imagine they have a better idea what its like to be a 1100 than you do.

Im not moaning at them, im saying that if somehow the basic questions could be answered without cluttering up the forum then even beginners would benefit......they would be able to find the answers they wanted quicker with past advice also they might look in and enjoy the more advanced threads which would be easier to find.

Remind me where Topalov is from........

Before Prof. Elo stamped numbers on our foreheads, people played to win tournaments or place as high as they could in the standings or simply win as many games they could. Forget ratings. Play to win and let others figure out how good you are. – Leon Poliakoff (US Master during the 1950’s)
I think Leon would have said the same thing about postings…let everybody post & let others figure out if they know what they’re talking about.
Originally posted by masscatI agree. I often learn from higher rated players, but I also learn from lower rated players too. I guess at a very general level, higher rated players are more likely to "know better" but I find there's too many exceptions to follow this too closely.

I agree to the need for stickies or a FAQ which would considerably add to the learning content here and be of value to newbies and vets alike. I suggested this about a year ago but received a deafening silence (about the FAQ).
The General and Chess threads have largely become a waste of time.
