I've taken up c4 because I am loathe to learn all the theory required to play e4 and not play a wussy system.

Still, c4 is not as active as I might like...maybe I'll slowly but surely decide on an e4 repertoire.

I would recommend c4 if you are lazy like me ๐Ÿ™‚

For aggressive players, the English opening is still a viable option. I recommend "The Dynamic English" by Tony Kosten.

That's the book I use, and I recommend it...but the english just isn't that aggressive by nature.

1.d4 big wave surfers. at first there's nothing to be seen. the surface looks calm. but the wave is building up far from the shore, slowly but unstoppably, building, building... un of natural moves. but hey, I'm not really hoping black just stumbles and throws the game.
Interesting suggestion with 1.f4 there, wormwood. You interested me enough to at least convince me to play a blitz game using it:

I can't see myself ever using this as my main opening choice from the white side, but it's pretty fun and might be useful for blitz or the occasional game where I feel like mixing it up. Oh yeah, I am aware that the game I posted is awful, but I figured I should show it anyway.

Now that I think about it,regarding the inherent aggressiveness of c4...doesn't larry christiansen often play the english?

Maybe a review of his english games can shine some light on aggressive c4 strategies.

Here is my tip for any beginners looking to pick an opening.

1.e4 - loses quickly but fun

1.d4 loses slowly and becomes disheartening

1.f4 - opponent plays the from gambit and blasts you off the board in under 20 moves.

I get good, active positions, and the opponents almost invariably overestimate the weakness of my king. it's not weak, it's active. I really have to try that some day. So far I have been playing e4 exclusively (except for thematic tournaments). The From tournament didn't really convince me, but I have been playing the Dutch a lot as black, and as tmetzler pointed out to me, f4 is a logical choice for someone who likes the Dutch.

That's pretty much my opinion.

I wouldn't so much say I care that much about the theory, it's just that I don't want to learn the theory before I'm absolutely sure that the given line is one I will want to play.

However, on the downside, as you described, 1.c4 doesn't exactly aim for the most active of openings, and it hardly ever coincides with the general styles of play in my other opening repetoire, but the positions are almost always dynamic and interesting, even if closed from time to time.

For now, I'll stick with it, but 1.e4 is always calling... ๐Ÿ˜‰

So you d4 players take a hike. ๐Ÿ˜‰
d4 in my opinion is the best opening, followed by c4 (because it has transpositional ability towards d4, and also keeps center of the board. Very flexibel!
