Its [ gid] [ /gid] and not [ fen] and [ /fen] as you tried. (without spaces)

cludi proceeded 60.b7? and the board was quickly drawn (60.b7? Be2+ 61.Kc5 Ka7 62.Kc6 Ba6 ... ==).

My 1st reaction was that cludi blew a win, but after doing some analysis I'm not so sure. A better start for me look ...[text shortened]... 3[/fen]

which is starting to look rather draw-ish.

Can anyone do better?

I think that 59.b6+ was too early and from then on draw looks forced to me. The pawns ware well placed next to each other and hard to be attacked by black. What about 59.Kc5 instead, and if 59....Bc8 (looks forced to me) 60.Kd6 and then via e5, f4, g3 go for the lone pawn? Still not piece of cake, but I think good winning chances, no?

From this position I have been unable to find a win for white, but black won a couple while I tried.

After Kc5 Bc8, If the white king goes after the rook pawn, black plays ..Bd7 forcing b6.
It still looks like a draw to me.

Sorry for the multiple posts - The fen boards and part of the message text were disappearing when I posted. The game was a genuine clan game which I assumed I'd lose. The game looked such an obvious win I thought cludi had blown it big-time ... but when I came back to analyse the game I couldn't find a win. Seems no-one else can either.

Gotta love this game, chess that is.

cheers,
Brett

Thanks Mephisto2. I was hoping you'd take a look. I'll try the lines you suggest and see if I come up with a win.

Yes, it's very easy if White is not careful, for Black to take over the h1-a8 diagonal, force a trade of bishops and then queen his h-pawn. This is why I don't think a win is possible for White; he has to just play to avoid losing here.

If Kc5 Bc8 Kd6 Kb8 Ke5 Bd7, white plays b6 safely. Followed by Bg2, capturing the pawn. If the bishop maintains itself on the diagonal (Bc8), Kf4 h3 Kg3! zugzwang.

Ok, I think something along these lines gets the win:

59.Kc5 Bc8 60.Kd6 Kb8 61.Ke5 Ka7 62.Kf4 Bd7 63.Bc6 Bc8 64.Kg5 h3 65.Kh4 Be6 66.Kg3 Bf5 67.b6+ Ka6 68.Bb5+ Kb7 69.Bf1

An awful lot of hard work.

cheers,
Brett
