First thing I thought of was promoting to a knight. That seems also enough to win, no stalemate from the check with the black queen.
But after black plays Qa2 either it's hard or impossible for white to activate his knight

Valid under promotions to a Bishop are very rare.

Here is a nice example. Tomic -v- Winzbeck, Dortmund 1993

[pgn]
[FEN "2r1b2k/2P4p/3R2pP/p2B1pP1/Pp2pP2/1P2K3/8/8 w - - 0 1"]

2. Rd8 Rxd8 {Now promotion to a Queen or Rook is stalemate.}
3. cxd8=B {White mates next move.}[/pgn]

Tim Krabbe has gathered together quite a few examples of under promotions.

Does black bishop to f7 not prevent the mate next move?

Yes. White can still win but Black can drag it out a bit. In the initial position, Be6 looks more to the point.

You are being silly. White just plays 1.Bxf7 and then it's mate next move. 🙂

Been haunted by stalemate recently.
In a blitz game just last night. I'm Black.

Hey all,

what if Black does not play 1. .. Rxd8, but Ra8? It seems like a good stalemate trap to me.
- 2. Rxa8: stalemate
- 2. c8=(whatever) Rxc8 3. Rxc8: stalemate (if not 3. Rxc8, Black removed the promoting pawn, which is good. The game afterwards is drawish)
- 2. something else: I don't see opportunities for white. Suggestions?

e.g. Bxa8. If you then revise your idea to be Rd8, Rb8 (instead of Ra8) then again White just plays the bishop somewhere to remove the stalemate, e.g. Ba8

Indeed, always easy to miss moves when not looking at the board. 😉

3. cxd8=B {White doesn't mate next move but still wins the game.} Bf7 4. Bf6+ Kg8 5. Bxf7+ Kxf7 6. Bd8 {and white will gobble black's queenside pawns... I'm sure when greenpawn said white mates next move he meant and white mates some next move. = )} [/pgn]
Mate. Perhaps someone knows a faster way?
2 extra credit points to whoever can tell me the name of the Kd2 tactic.

[pgn][SetUp "1"][FEN "2r1b2k/2P4p/3R2pP/p2B1pP1/Pp2pP2/1P2K3/8/8 w - - 0 1"]1. Rf6 {threatening mate} Bd7 2. Kd2 {not e2, else white must reply... Kd2 followed by e3+ and Ke2 and black is in zuggers!} e3+ 3. Ke2 {zuggers!} Re8 {logical} 4. R ...[text shortened]... {but not Rxe8 else stalemate trouble looms again} Rf8 7. Rd8 Rxd8 8. cxd8=R# 1-0[/pgn]
