Originally posted by gambit3I think you're absolutely right about Petrosian and Spassky, but unfortunately, and as much as I hate to say it, I think the Spassky comment would also have to apply to Fischer.
Petrosian was a old lion and Spassky was a lion with no desire to stay on the top.
Fischer had as much (probably more) desire to GET to the top as any player ever has, but once he got there, his idea of staying there was to simply not compete any more...
Certainly, the general consensus in the mid-70s was that Fischer would have easily defeated Karpov in a match, and that may be true...although three years is a long time to go without playing a single game....Karpov held the title for 10 years and really didn't avoid anyone...
As far as what would have happened in a Fischer-Kasparov match if both were in their prime...it's like asking how would Ty Cobb hit against Roger Clemens? No one knows...all you can really do is speculate (and maybe run some computer simulations).
Some have suggested that Fischer would have won because Kasparov's record in match play wasn't as good as Fischer's... but Fischer never played a match AS World Champion...no one knows how the pressure of defending his title would have affected him.
So, in terms of a Fischer/Kasparov match with both men in their primes... no one really knows... but I have a feelng that Fischer would have crumbled against Deep Blue as easily as Kasparov did...assuming that you could have paid Fischer enough to risk his reputation by actually playing...and that's doubtful...
btw, here is a link to some audio/video clips, including some comments by Karpov on Fischer, and by Kasparov on the unplayed Fischer-Karpov match.

Kasparov says that if Fischer could have survived the first 10-15 games against Karpov without too much damage being done, then he (Fischer) had a good chance to win... but added that Fischer would be facing an opponent unlike anything he'd ever faced (same is true of Karpov), but because Karpov was a 'machine', Kasparov thinks Fischer would be the more likely of the two to crack under pressure.

The "strongest chess player ever" would not have lost a match without being able to win a single game like Kasparov did against Kramnik.
Fischer was a genius in chess . Point is , he has too many things happening in his life . He has been tortured by the US government . They imprisoned him . The world has had a poll for him .
A : Bring him to Japan and let him rot in jail .
B : Take him to the United States where he shall stand trial.
C : Free Bobby !
D : Force Bobby to play chess again.
He has no apparent career at the moment but he is being sponsored for organizing tournaments , and playing sometimes on his parole.
He has tried a million times to escape .
There has been another poll of what will soon happen to Bobby as predictions.
A : He will die eventually by a heart attack or cancer.
B : He will be free and will be able to retire from chess and continue his religious life.
C : He will bust out of jail and become world champion again .
D : He will be free but will go bankrupt with no home or food and family.
PERSONALLY , I believe , he'll bust out of jail and become world champion again , he is now 61 and faces 10 years for playing chess in Yugoslavia .
Fischer vs. Kasparov :
Bobby should be able to easily smash Kasparov like an ant .
On his way to challenge , ex-World Champion Boris spassky , he crushed Bent Larsen and Mark Taimanov 6-0 . Onyl player who could show a tiny effort to breaking his streak was ex-World Champion Tigran Petrosian , but he lost anyway and Bobby then had rights to challenge Spassky . Spassky preferred Iclenad (Rekjavek) and Bobby preferred Yugoslavia (Belgrade) and they played in Iceland where Bobby won 12.5 8.5 Bobby also first said he would not play unless tournament victory cash purse was raised to $5,000,000 . He forfeited his second game by purposefully not coming the match , mainly becuase he declined some of the rules so the community had to adjust to his settings . He then won , and donated most of the money to his religious radio broadcasting coorporation , The World Tomorrow.
He donated it , but the main character in the show soon retired and he hence felt betrayed by them . He then got a U.S. Passport from the U.S. embassy in Switzerland . He travlled back and forth through many countries . I don't know some part but he started hating the U.S. Government for some reason . Then , they tried to destory poor old Bobby's Passprot and Bobby himself , but bobby escaped all around the world , Manila , Tokyo , Rekjavek until at one point , he had to rematch Spassky in Yogoslavia , and he had an Arrest warrant on him . He smashed Spassky (obviously) and got the omney ($5,000,000) but the US government charged him a lot of the cash for playing and he then went to prison in the U.S and now he's there.
Kasparov's chess playing ability is gradually decreasing becuase he's retired and is now a Russian politician but Bobby is training in his cell and people say he'll soon bust out and become World Cahmpion again. The only bad part is when he didn't want to join FIDE becuase he refused to play normal chess , he proped FischerRandom (aka Chess960) but they declined his proposal , and he got the title stripped of him , and Karpov became world champion , "for nothing" .
