thats so true, i have only been to 1 in a good building.. i went to one (Edmonton) that had a step aerobics class above it til 7.30 it was quite a comedy... The internet has done wonders for chess, there are so many variants now, bullet (chesscube) blitz (chess.com) RHP of course. Plus all the databases and free computers its marvelous for chess.
