black to move.

today in Dortmund, Kramnik took 45 minutes on this move (whether to accept the rook sacrifice or not), and ended up playing ...Ng6, which turns out to be a blunder. (this is what the folks at chessbase tell anyway.)

45 minutes... about taking a hanging rook or not. can y ...[text shortened]... his is one of the key features of the great, having that tenacious, enduring, patient mind set.
David Bronstein once spent 40 minutes on his very first move!

I have found a new idea lately - I will think up some ideas and then write them down in the game notes. Then next few moves I will have most of my moves ready and it is just a matter of quickly checking for blunders and revising my strategy.

Also, what Kramnik can calculate in his head in that position in 45 mins will be vastly more than us mere mortals. There most have been a strong reason why he didn't just take the Rook straight away, but it will be beyond most of our comprehension.

Im in an incredibly busy time in 'real' life and as such I am virtually blitzing games at the moment. When I can, I try to look at a position and then go away and do something else, whilst my mind tries to get a handle on where I am.

I would hope to move up a few rating points if I took more time on each move.

Alright, so we all know that thorough analysis is in general a good thing if you want to play at your peak, but how long do you actually spend thinking about your moves for any particular game? Obviously it will vary widely depending on the type of game, but I reckon it's about 45 minutes or so as an average for me, though I have been known to take an hou ...[text shortened]... an individual position. Any advance on that, or any mind boggling feats of blitzing out there?
I average about 30-40 min. per move, but have spent as much as 2 hours in difficult positions. I also use a standard chess set to anaylize with. I used to go much faster, maybe 2-3 min. per move, but my rating dropped 300 points in a year. Slower = Better
