this thread (and even this Forum) has skewed off course, and i have a few gripes:
1: I was trying to ask a genuine question for my interest & others. At first I didn't clarify all the variables, and also got confused about 'moves vs plys'. If those who chose to post 'unhelpful' responses had read the entire thread then we might have got somewhere.
2: I really thought this Forum was about Chess. I also really thought that at at least one of our forums could have some sense of seriousness.
3:If you cant add anything genuinely constructive in this forum then go away.

I also often think that I can analyze 10-15 ply ahead. Unfortunately it is rare that my variations are accurate that far out. This may be the difference in what you are claiming and what others are hearing. Many GM's and IM's have said that they don't calculate very deeply in most positions, and I tend to believe that. But in extremely tactical positions, they can and do calculate very deeply...usually because the lines are more forced. I thik this was the reason behind Reti's "1 move" claim (which is well documented). I believe his point was that in most positions, you don't need to look too deeply. True, you have to do a tactical assesment to make sure you aren't hanging anything when you make a "positional" move, but top level players probably do this with much less conscious effort than the rest of us.

*EDIT* When I say rare, I mean never 😉

After Steinitz's 25th move, his embarassed opponent left the playing hall and didn't return. After Steinitz won on time, he demonstarted to the onlookers the forced mate that he had seen in his head as early as move 20.

Here I put the moves from the actual game together with the continuation for those who wish to cut and paste the entire thing into their chess application.
