The purpose of outflanking is to win a pawn, while assuring the advance of one of your own. The purpose of gaining the opposition is to cretae the opportunity for a productive outflanking.

This is another good puzzle to help learn opposition and outflanking from Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual.

Mate black with just one (mating) move for the Rook.

D
