Hi Robbie.

Carrying on with the hypothectical case. what happens if the blunder
involves a capture and you want to give the move back.

How do you replace the piece/pawn that has been taken?

Also: Are you doing the lad any favours by allowing a move to be
taken back. He won't be so clumsy next time when he is playing
in a real game.

It's a bad habit to encourage.

The game will have an air hanging over it. He will feel obliged not to beat you.
The rest of the game will be too chummy.

Your blank move - The Rook move, does this mean you cannot castle?
Or will he play 5 blank moves later on allowing you to castle by hand.

Too many if's and buts.

Imagine the world was hit by an asteroid and everything destroyed
exept the moves of that game and some alien happend upon it
amongst all the debris.

What will they make of it?

Do you want the aliens to think we played a game where players
were allowed to undo their blunders?

I bet you never thought of that?

Take the Queen, there is no such thing as a friendly game of chess.

I would take the queen, then offer a draw. 🙂
Ok. I'd just take the queen. 😞

Hi Robbie,

I'd like to answer your hypothetical from the other side of the coin. If I made a blunder like that (and I have, and will certainly do so in the future, no doubt), and it clearly decided the game, I would resign immediately and offer another game.

I want to improve myself, and one way I do that is to hold myself absolutely accountable for my moves, and I don't want anyone to do anything that mitigates my mistakes or acts as my "enabler" for blunders. "Do overs" make me sloppy, and I don't want to be sloppy.

By holding myself to this standard, it forces me to play more carefully, and the side effect is that it takes the hypothetical question out of the hands of my friends- and in fact I pressure them to hold me accountable, so they feel like they are doing me a favor!

I suppose it depends on what you are trying to get out of playing, but part of my "fun" is pushing myself to get better, so while losing is not itself fun, it at least points me in the direction of future fun.

LOL, it is really hilarious what has transpired. my freind, made his move before he saw the message that i sent him offering to make a blank move so that he could retract his queen. here is a similar position, different to the one in the game, but near enough so that you can fully understand the laurel and hardy nature of this scenario.

here was the approximate position (i have removed two rooks so that the game can be commented upon, as its not identical, hopefully this is ok, but id hate to think i was getting anyone in trouble, including me)

My opponent has played his queen to h5 and left it en prise, i am black of course

i said that i will make a blank, but not seeing the message instead my opponent made a similar move to this,

lol, he sent me a message saying that he feels like a Dork (must be an American term for doofer or dumpling as we say in Scotland), i just laughed and laughed, this, and thinking of Greenpawns, Checkov the chess player has made my day, plus an email from a friend Yannis on the najdorf, which i shall post, because it contains some sublime wisdom. 😀

Your Americanese is correct! We also use the term "doofus", which I am sure is the, uh, ... original latin term and root word for "doofer..."😏
