The pawns are necessary because they are the only pieces which cannot reverse their moves.
I expect you're right about the 99.9% chance. But I should be pleasantly fascinated if someone could find that 0.01% shot. I thought it was impossible altogether till Peakite figured it out, which just proves, well nothing much actually, just proves that I am sometimes wrong.
