I would suggest (only half tongue-in-cheek) that Karpov would have played whatever Furman and Geller told him to play!

Karpov routinely gets Colle-like positions from the French Tarrasch, and he favors Colle-like white positions where black avoids ...d5. GMs master positions, and can plot an arrival into them from a variety of move orders. It is a dance:
