Apparently - never tested it, but you cannot force mate with Three Knights.

Look good enough to me. Remember reading in a beginners book
years ago, I can cleary see the page, but alas not the title.

"You cannot force checkmate with two Knight, you cannot even force a
checkmate with three Knights."

An amazing little site that one - cheers.

And there is the anomaly that two knights can't force checkmate but a lone knight can - if your opponent has a pawn. This from Yasser Seirawans endings book:

White to move and win.

1.Nc1...a2(forced)
2.Nb3++

Yeah, you need some Kings and stuff, too. 😛

I remember seeing an actual game where the player had to
under promote to a Knight, thus having 3 Knights (and a King)
v a lone Knight (and a King) - no pawns. and winning.

It was one of these positions where the King and the Queening
square were Knight forkable so taking a Knight stopped the
Knight fork. That's about all I can recall on that one.

Not got my database computer switched on so cannot dig out the game.
(if it's on there - have 3 million games, so it should be).

Went through the few beginner books I have cannot find original
quote. None mention a 3 Knight mate.

The Rev Cunnington - anybody got his beginners book?

Wonder if long ago it was thought impossible, though that site made
it look straight forward.

Anyway it's 1:30am here - I'm off to bed. See if I can dig out that
game tomorrow (tonight).

I have a film crew coming around my house on Thursday to film me
and all my chess sets - I'm gonna be a star!
