They're all good, too good for the average player, but you can't go wrong with Fritz or Shredder. End Game Table Bases are nice, but even without them, you'll be crushed. Don't worry about it.

This is not about opinion. Rybka is by far the best.

fritz is the strongest engine by a longshot.. i personally believe that even without an endgame database, it can analyze the endgame just as well as chessmaster can WITH a database... if your looking specificaly for endgames go chessmaster10th, otherwise, i like fritz.

One person said that Zap! Chess Zanzibar does real well against Rybka, but not against the other engines. One of my friends has it and doesn't do to bad.

Doh. Shows how much I know about Fritz. Thought I read somewhere that Fritz loses out to CM in the endgame. Guess this show you can't believe everything you read on the net. My apologies.

Rybka's still top.

In ratings list it is. I've seen Zap! Chess Zanzibars crush Rybkas in the Playchess engine room.

Yes, but these may have been isolated incidents or due to a better opening book. Rating lists are better at determining engine strength.

For someone of my meager ability, CM is just right for me. I plan on upgrading to Fritz once I deem myself worthy of its greatness 🙂
I can varify that.

CM10000 I got came with a endgame tablebase while the Deep Fritz 8 I got did not.

Fritz 8 wastes CM10000 on a 3 times slow computer but if CM can get to the endgame, it dominates!

Simply because the fritz I have did not come with an EGTB.

If it did then I'm sure we all know who would win.

Yeah, it's WAY too much trouble to download the free EGTB files from the internet for use with Fritz. 😕

That's what you get for using pirated software.
