A 2nd place tie won me a few bucks (though that wasn't all that important) and got my rating ove ...[text shortened]... 4 OTB Games since last Labor Day weekend, the results considerably exceeded my expectations.
Yeah, its a great result and I hope you keep on having success. I plan on playing in the Washington open next year (will be the biggest tourney i've ever been to) I only have played in scholastic tournament back when I was around 8.

I used to play the sicilian dragon but, as unbelievable as it may sound, i've grown board with it as black and tired of playing against it as white so I'm going to play 1.d4 as white and 1..c6 against 1.d4 and 1...e5 against 1.e4 but this all off topic.

Congrats on braking the 1600 barrier.

Black obviously.

It looks like I am a wuss after all.😞 This was a third round game; if I had won it rather than drawn, I would have been tied for first when I played in the final round rather than being a half point behind. My final opponent had White, played for the draw and got it, winning the U1700 and leaving me tied for 2nd.
I thought it was White to play; and anyway congrats for the results, way to go!

I made some analysis with Rybka 3. If White to move then it`s draw. If Black to move then after 1...Kg5 (with 2...g5 to follow) Black wins as White lacks only one tempo to get their King close enough.

What's the plan for white in this sort of position? Do you bring the rook to a1 and check along that rank or bring the king in front of the pawns and check from the side or what?

Its impossible to get White King in front of pawns, if Black are precise. But White should try to get your King closer as soon as possible and then make checks with Rook.

The ideal position would be to have your king in front your rook behind and blacks king behind.. But like Cimon pointed out, you have to be realistic so you just have to get your king close. If the pawns are to far advanced you can't draw. In this case white doesn't have enough time since its blacks move.

I'm just correcting the post. Its 1...Kf5 to win with 2...g5 to follow.

Thanks. I thinking in general as well as this specific position. i know if I ended up with an endgame like this, I wouldn't really know what I was doing!
