Hi,
I working on a website(work in progress) - passionforchess.com. I am looking for feedback from the chess community.Rite now it has some 20 combinations to solve.
thanks
The site looks good.Nice, clear diagrams with easy to recognise pieces.Excellent!
Difficulty level of the puzzles is good too,for my standard of play anyway.I assume, while the site evolves, the level will gradually rise? You should also add more easy ones so you have puzzles for all ranges of players.
I would prefer drag 'n drop over typing in the moves but that's probably just me being lazy ๐
A 'show solution' button would be nice.
While doing the puzzles I did experience some problems. Will elaborate on those in a seperate post. Here's the summary:
I think some puzzles have a wrong solution(#9 and #18?)
Some puzzles have several correct solutions(#11,#19 and #21).You need to include these alternate lines in the solution.

Hi,

1.Qh5,Kd7 2.Qf5,Ke7 3.Qf7 is forced mate in 3 yet it's not the correct answer?
Puzzle 11 White to move (7 ply)
Rxh6 forces the win because Black's queen will fall eventually.I'm only assuming this is the solution because I gave up trying to find what you consider the best line.
When there are several lines leading to the win,you need to include them all else it just frustrates the user.
Puzzle 18
Black to move (3 ply)
1....,Bg2 2.Kxg2,Rf2! is not the correct answer.
What is the better line?
Puzzle 19
White to move (9 ply)
At the end of this mate in 5 White can play:
4.Rg6 - 4.Rg5 - 4.Rg4 - 4.Rg3 - 4.Rg2 - 4.Rg1 all with mate next move.
Apparently only one of these is considered correct. This one definitely needs alternate lines
Puzzle 21
White to move (5 ply)
1.Bxf7,Rxf7 2.Qxf7,Kh8 3.Qf8 checkmate
1.Bxf7,Kh8 2.Qg6 with mate next move.For instance 2...,hxg5 3.Qh5 checkmate
Neither of these forced mates (in 5 ply!) are the correct solution.Rather puzzling.
Hi Romanticus,
Thanks for the detailed feedback! Your passion for chess comes through in the feedback.
First of all regarding wrong solutions for problem 9 and 18.You are absolutely right.I had wrong solution in my database.Corrected.
For problems(11,19 and 21) which have multiple solutions, I will look into it, and have multiple alternatives. But, it will be little difficult. For example - problem 19 has so many alternatives๐, I will have to check thoroughly. BTW, for problem 21 - this solution should have worked - 1.Bxf7,Kh8 2.Qg6 hxg5 3.Qh5..
'show solution' button would be nice.
That's on my list, next. I will have 2 options - 'Retry'( this will clear the textboxes) and 'Show Solution'.
I have started working on this site 2 weeks back.My first aim was to get a working site where people can solve combinations. Also, I wanted to make an accessible chessboard.Rite now, the board is accessible for visually impaired players(though I have not yet received feedback from a visually impaired chess player) . I have started off with textboxes for submitting solutions.Instead of, drag and drop, I was thinking of giving option of clicking squares to which pieces should move. And, the textboxes will be filled appropriately.
Lastly, what do you think of the feedback page?

For puzzles with multiple solutions maybe you could cut them short?Take #19,you could stop where it's mate in two.People who found the previous moves will know anyway, but do mention it in the solution for the ones that didn't get it.
Clicking squares is as good as drag 'n drop.
'Retry' button would be nice too.Good idea ๐
Maybe number the puzzles too?Perhaps it has no practical use but,for some odd reason,I find it looks nicer.
There's a feedback page? ๐
Guess that's a hint,I'll put this in there as well.
Good work. I notice the text boxes are case sensitive, so it's only for people who are experienced enough to type accurate notation - a clicking option would give it a wider appeal.
I don't know about the visually impaired aspect but when I half closed my eyes the black pieces pretty much disappeared against the grey.
Maybe when the functionality is developed you could ramp up the level of design.
Good luck - I'll check in from time to time.

Hi Mahout,
thanks for the feedback and encouragement.I will change the color from grey to something else for the board.
As far as notation is considered, should I allow small-case too? I amnot sure about it.
Take the below position. If you type bxc3,and you allowed lower-case for pieces, then which one captures?
White to move
Show solution is a really good addition. I'd go for a slightly darker blue...buut only if you think so too. If the problems were numbered then it would be easier to give feedback if there's a question about one of the puzzles.
I like the fact that it's not timed or graded...just practice the puzzle. And because you can't move the pieces around you have to visualize it.
Now I'd like the option for a bigger board and also to be able to have the board more in the centre of my screen...I'm on firefox btw and it's all very solid.
On the feedback section it might be interesting to scroll through feedback from other users.

* changed color of square
* problem number shown
* added feedback received so far to the feedback section

Should I give an option, using which a different page will open with larger board? Or maybe user can just do ctl++.
