Think about it this way.

The opponent also plays his part in the draw by repeating his position thrice. He could walk away from the draw by just not repeating the same position.

If he has huge material advantage, he could sacrifice some of it to be in the game. Otherwise, its even.

I thought the position has to occur on consecutive moves... This definitely might affect the game... Interesting!!!
Remember also that the position must be dynamically the same rather than just have the pieces on the same squares, so if ep or 0-0 was possible (for example) the 1st time but not on the 2nd or 3rd occurance it is not a repetition.
