#1 was from Averbakh - Spassky, Leningrad 1956 (Spassky's move)

# 2 was from Topalov - Shirov, Linares 1998 (Shirov's move)

definitely a site worth checking out!

This is my first attempt at posting a FEN, hope it works...

IMO, the most brilliant move ever made on a chessboard was made by Frank Marshall in 1912 against Levitzky. So electrifying was its effect on the spectators that they showered his board with gold pieces.

From this positi ...[text shortened]... s soon as he recovered from this shock, he resigned!

Anyone ever see a better move than this?
ok, i've looked at the board and cannot see why white resigned. Maybe with no letters or numbers i'm looking at it wrong but I placed the queen in front of the three pawns. If this is so why not take it with a pawn.

I know i'm probably being really slow here, but be patient, I am trying to learn,

Thank you,

There is nothing wrong in asking: never apologise, asking is the only way to learn. First of all Black is a piece ahead, and after 23...Qg3!! (though 23...Qe3! would have also worked) White resigned due to the threat 24...Qxh2#
24.fxg3 is met by 24...Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Rxf1#
24.hxg3 is met by 24...Ne2#
24.Qxg3 is met by 24...Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Nxg3+ 26.Kg1 /26.fxg3 Rxf1#/
26...Nxf1 - +

Blimey that was hard work. Getting used to to reading all those numbers and letters takes some doing. I finally understand now, it took me 15 minutes of writing down your post then going through all possible combinations.

I know I should take up draughts !!! Thank you anyway,

bambee🙂

Your post seemed to insinuate that she was stupid for not doing so in the first place. Obviously that wasn't the way you intended it to sound, so never mind. 😉

I think everyone finds it difficult to begin with (I know I did). But keep at it and it becomes much easier.

You might be interested to know that the "newer" algebraic notation is (in my opinion) a great improvement over the previous "Descriptive" notation that used to be used in chess (until about the early 80s or so)...

In descriptive notation, each square actually had two names, one from White's perspective, and one from Black's...

So what we would now call sqare a1, would be known as QR1 (square 1 in the Queen Rook file) from White's perspective, and would be known as QR8 (the 8th square in the Queen's rook file) from Black's perspective.

The opening 1. e4 e5 would have been written 1. P-K4 P-K4 in descriptive notation (each player moves his pawn to the 4th rank in front of the King).

IF you look at older chess books, you'll find many of them written in this way.

But just keep at it, you'll catch on very quickly...even experienced players often make mistakes scoring their games, because they don't get the names of the squares correctly, and then later, can't reconstruct the game...

Most Brilliant Move

One time, i was losing a game., and when the person went to the bathroom, I substituted my bishop for a queen. Then.. when he went to grab a drink, I broke the head off his bishops, and he thought they were pawns from then on out.. mwa mwa ha ha ha ha.. I crushed him from after that
