I have just received my first ever chess rating, which I'm quite proud about in one way but on the other hand its left me a little confused!
I know this as probably been asked a fair few times before but how come my rating has gone down even when I've won?
Also how many game would it take to get an accurate rating & how does this rating compare to over the board ratings?
Cheers 'a fairly proud' Jay
Good job on your rating. It takes time in any organization for your rating to reflect your actual playing strength. The more games you play, the more accurate it will become...up to a point. One's rating will never be 100% accurate however, so don't get too attached to it. 😏

Until you complete 20 games, you will have a provisional rating. This rating is calculated as the average of all the games you have played. Each game is scored as being your opponent's rating (for a draw), your opponent's rating plus 400 (for a win), or your opponent's rating minus 400 (for a loss). If your opponent is also on a provisional rating, then the ...[text shortened]... nd you get 1489.
1519 + 1596 + 1489 = 4604
4604/3 = 1535 (your rating after three games)
Thank you for that.. It makes a little more sense to me now!!

Just to add to this topic,
Would it be worth while for a highly rated player to play a low rated player as far as gaining points go? What is the biggest difference needed for the higher rated player to get zero or even minus points?
ie; would Weyerstrass for example gain anything in playing & beating me?
I hope this question makes sense?

Not really. Even though you are guaranteed at least 1 point for a win (thus no zero point or negative point games) all it takes is one loss to really screw up your rating.

eg. A player with a 2000 rating plays 100 games with players ranked players ranked 1200. Each game he wins awards him only 1 point, put a loss in any of the games costs him 32 points and a draw would cost him 16.

So while it looks pretty decent for padding your rating because you should win 99% of the games against someone 800 points lower than you, one careless move could easily cost you a lot more points than you are farming by winning most opf the other games.

Note: The 1 point minimum guarantee only applies once you are no longer a provisionally rated player. It also guarantees that you will lose at least 1 point for a loss.
