Aim high. My New Years resolution is to become FM, I know theres no way im going to do it but im going to try anyway and see how far I get 🙂
Maybe I might add beat Kasparov at blindfolded chess.....not sure....maybe for the New Year after this one 😛
Well, Kasparov has played on playchess.com (was mentioned on a chessbase page I don't recall, etc.). I don't think you're quite in his league yet. 🙂
I think making your goals improvement based rather than rating based would help, although improvement would coincide with rating. 🙂
Restricting the quantity of games played, play at generally OTB time controls, except when testing openings and testing your technique at faster controls, and concentrating on analysis helps, although proper analysis technique is a matter of trial and error. The analysis should be specifically focused towards improving your play.
Reading chess books and playing chess is great for improvement, and most importantly, enjoyable, but absolutely, this alone, doesn't directly lead to results.
A true understanding of one's errors would be best. When performing a postmortem analysis, seeing the accurate move, one must consider, if I was to see a similar position again, would I be able to play the most accurate move?
Focus specifically on a very few systems and play to your strengths. It's impossible to try to maintain too much in one's repetoire and keep up with theory at any level. If one tries to learn too many systems at once, there's a much greater chance that one may learn little at all! (Speaking from experience here...) 😞
Now I'm just rambling, and my advice perhaps unnecessary, especially to a stronger player. Hopefully helpful though. Cheers. 🙂
(My New Year's resolution is to have more consistency in my play, and develop a complete understanding of a few opening systems and the resulting positions of those systems...still trying to decide which systems, though...probably choosing the simplest and the systems which I currently understand best.)
1.play chess.
2.perfect and memorize variations of the scandinavian that i made up, and name it the italian variation.
edit:
3. may take me my entire life, but make an opening or defense named after my last name.
(EcstremeVenom).
My goals are the same, except I wanna hit (and stay on) 1500, and name my made up variation of the English the Mason Variation (if it hasn't been played before, which I hope it hasn't).

I tend to play games no shorter than 40 mins the longer the better in my view, I tend to play pretty fast most of the time but some games (those that need more caculation rather than more positional wooing) I really do eat time up not uncommon for me to be spending 10-15 mins each move OTB at least until time pressure makes me speed up 🙂
Iv taken to getting coaching, Iv got loads of chess books and have read most of them, play pretty regularly too......the coaching is a big help its set me off in directions id never have thought of before.
I know I wont make FM next years and probably not the year after but as long as the goals are pushing me to my limit and maybe beyond im happy. Iv have a good friend whos FM (2400 FIDE), when I first started to play against him a year ago I won the first two games, then he won the next and I won the one after that.......reality quickly restored itself though and he wins most games now although I still do get the odd result here and there 🙂

Walk in, play and don't look back.
