Not really. If he remained at 1600 he would still only stand a 50% chance of victory against another 1600 player but what should happen if that the player playing only 1800 players should improve more than the guy only playing 1400s and his rating will go up reflecting his stronger opposition.

For what you're saying to be true, you would need to beat 1400s 75% of the time (needed to get to 1600). And yet, being that you say you play mostly 1500-1700s and are still at 1400, you must beat 1600s only about 25% of the time.
Why this huge discrepancy? How could you be so disproportionately strong against 1400s and so desperately weak against 1600s?
IMO, this is just a misunderstanding of how the formulas work. Rating differences are already accounted for, and after many games your rating is going to match your playing strength whether you choose strong or weak opponents.
Lots of people seem to need an excuse for why their rating isn't what it "should" or "could" be. Better to just accept that your rating is the best current estimate of your playing strength. At least that way you're being honest with yourself and have a good starting point to build from.

but then, everyone who had played (and lost to) his engine would want their rating-points back, too. This would probably prove to be an administrative nightmare.

most new ones seem to get caught pretty quickly, and I doubt there are many old ones left either.

Originally posted by Guychi'm 99% sure the answer is no. Otherwise I wouldn't be allowed to play the Traxler gambit anymore, being as Fritz does find 90% of the tactics in that line, and I first learned about the opening through fritz... I just have to work out the other 10 (queen sac's, deciding when not to take the draw (being as fritz will always when down material), etc.)
Sometimes I play against computer after setting a particular position. For example, I set fried liver atack and see how computer plays against it. I try to remember computer's moves in that situations. Now, if I do those moves in my games here on RHP can anything unpleasant happen to me. I don't think I'd have many moves similar to computer's, maybe only several in only some games.
Originally posted by incandenzaI guess I worded that poorly. What I meant is right now I am playing mostly 1500-1700 players and my rating is still in the 1400s. I took a break from the site to improve OTB and when I came back I was a stronger player winning basically every game against 1400 rated players since then.

Edit: I think it is also because I play kind of reckless and 1400 players can't cope with that and end up losing but the higher rated players can and that causes me to lose. I have stopped playing like that now and hopefully it will show in my playing strength.
