I'm not familiar with the Melts book. A more recent book that covers the 3...Qd6 Scandinavian is "Ideas Behind the Modern Chess Openings: Black" by IM Gary Lane. He also advocates the Tchigorin Defense (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6) against 1 d4.

Back in the 1980's, a monthly publication called "Player's Chess News: Theory and Analysis" published an article on the 3...Qd6 Scandinavian called "The Third Evil." (The other two "evils" were 3...Qa5 and 3...Qd8.)
