finnish national rating is about the same as fide. for example GM tomi nybäck 2562 fide, 2578 selo.
with 2300 you get 10th in nybäck's club 'shakkivelhot' alone, and there's 15-20 clubs in helsinki. I did a search on most local clubs I could think of:
http://www.shakki.net/cgi-bin/selolista/?haku=vantsk+78+leppsisu+pasvs+hraus+58+k%E4psk+ssk+riksha+hs ...[text shortened]... names was too long for rhp, but anyway 34th place with 2300, 13th with 2400, 4th with 2500.
You can also see too long addresses by using "Reply and Quote".

isnt Edmonton a metropolis or something? cant believe there are so few good players in edmonton...
in Helsinki (about 600 000 people) one would need almost 2300 rating to be ranked in the top 20.
"City of Champions" because of Wayne G. from NHL hockey and of course our beloved Edmonton Eskimos, Grey Cup Champs 2006!
Anyways, this is Canada and Chess still hasn't caught on much. There are only 5500 chess player registered in Canadian and most of them are in Ontario, Quebec, and Bc. People like Jean Herbert.
Or maybe it's because the people in Helsinki are really good at chess? or your ratings are inflated? Who knows, i'm just happy 🙂

We only got 1 club here like an actual club which has national ratings but then there's the usual school clubs which don't count.
Ya, so i think because you guys are more into chess then Edmonton people. But in Ontario, Bc and, Quebec yes the top 20 list would require 2000+ rating to get on there because they are more into chess, better players, most of our Canadain Gm's are from there. I think all of them are.
Originally posted by RahimKI was also surprised about how many clubs there were, I knew about five of them. but it seems like every town district has it's own club. within the search results there was 1113 rated players here, of total 7728 in finland. so we've got 15-20% of all players.

Finland 7728 players, size tiny
Canada 5500 players, size biggest country? (Alaska is still ours! haha although those yankees own it haha, jj) 🙂
An edmonton is not a huge at chess compared to toronto, and other bigger canadian cities.
