why is everyone taking what i say and twisting it....Just because i tell you how to play faster doesn't mean that I dont like to take my time and think. And just because i can spend 10 min or so on a move, doesnt mean that i am against a quick thought eigther. And in your (I forget who at the moment) repsonse to my suggesting blitz, i ment to say to use the 10min per move setting, because compared to his 40min moves, that will seem like blitz to him
C.J.S. Purdy (4-time Australian Champ & World Corres. Champ) had this to say: Allowing for as few as 3 reasonable possibilities at each move, to see 3 moves ahead would involve holding in mind 243 different variations, and 4 moves ahead would bring it to 2187. Exact calculation more than 2 moves ahead is possible only when we can make threatening moves which practically force the reply.
One might conclude that unless you're trying to work out a combination, going more than a couple of move ahead is a waste of time.
Look for combinations (99% of the time there won't be one) then pick the most reasonable move that comes to mind and play it. Getting bogged down with a gajillion moves COULD cause your head to explode! "Think long, think wrong"
evaluating a position is WAAAAY more important than spending 4 hours trying EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE COMBINATION
If say for example, you have control of the center squares, then focus on keeping your control of that center strong, and don't waste time considering all the possible ways to checkmate the king which turns out to be defended by six pieces...
