The top player in my county currently has this philosophy: sharp and sound against weaker, boring/solid against stronger. Basically, make it tactically crazy against weaker and positional against stronger. Unfortunantly for him, I have evil plans for him this weekend...muhahahha
That's pretty much what I do. I play KG, Smith Morra, Benko, Dragon against lower rated players as I think I should be able to out tactic them.

I try to play as positional as possible in the opening against better players, and generally avoid gambits.

So basically, the only difference in my play is in the opening I chose.

wasn't that draw against reshevsky? what a nice trophy. 🙂 I haven't really won anyone who could maintain 2000+...

I play the same way against the high and low rated. complicate, ignore danger and go for the jugular. occasionally it even works. 😛

I tend to exchange off pieces as quickly as I can against stronger players and I tend to exchange off pieces as quickly as possible against weaker players... hmmm I see a pattern there...

Game 4348747 Here is how to deal with a weaker player, get a better position and then get complacent.

Game 4252121 This is how to deal with a stronger player - try doing something clever and end up getting overpowered.

The lesson to be learned here is stick at playing those who have similar ratings - they will always give you the best games.

I don't have any special tactics against stronger or weaker players.

I'm generally unpredictable, I vary my openings - specifically refusing to learn their various names on general principle. If someone says 'do you play the accelerated power dragon opening - I'm liable to think they're talking about the local Chinese takeaway shop!

I play suspect sacrifices and the occasional inspired one. I get some good victories and some horrendous losses. Such is life.

I do that too, and it works well against both weaker and stronger players. I love playing exchange variations against the French, Slav, QGD and Caro-Kann, in both sides and against any opponent. I have a pretty good record in all of them, too. =P

It is a misconception that occurs often: players wanting to exchange pieces against stronger opponents, hoping to increase their chances of drawing. Too bad that the stronger opponents are more than likely also better at endgames (even more so because there are no databases to be used).

I do it because I know my endgames better than I know my openings and middle game. It's my favorite stage of the game and the one I've studied the most, so I feel my chances are better there - especially knowing that most people focus their chess studies on openings and tactics.

You like endgames eh? Do you happen to have "On The Endgame" by C.J.S . Purdy?

That sounds good to me. Next step towards a substantial improvement is middlegame tactics then.

I'm the same, give me an endgame and if I concentrate I'm pretty damn good. The only problem is against weaker players sometimes I don't concentrate as much, stupid I know! (since I'm one of those weaker players atm lol)
