so I play this game against a 700 something in blitz, right
all the pawn moves probably weren't necessary, but I was methodic in squeezing him of space before slipping in w/ queen.
anyway, the game itself has little to do with what I need to ask you guys.
after the mating move, I tell the guy: "gg" meaning universally: "good game" and I always do this, win or lose. I always thought of it as curteous until now. after saying it, the guy says: "wow, bg" obviously meaning bad game. when you annihilate someone, and then say good game, does it come across as rude? what do you guys do after destroying a much weaker opponent?

Basically do a war dance, shout some random words in German, throw their king at them and laugh whilst emptying my beer over their head.

I find if I really thrash somebody, of if they lose by making a horrible blunder I try and avoid saying good game because they know they messed up and I know I didnt really work for my win but had it gifted to me.

The typewriter keys 'b' and 'g' are right next to each other. He was probably trying to write "wow, good game!" as a compliment to you in return, but his finger slipped and did a typo. And now you've gone and mentioned in a public forum how you "annihilated" him, and called him a "much weaker opponent" all because you couldn't give him the benefit of the doubt. Way to go and crush the hopes and dreams of a 700-rated player who only wanted to be nice to you. 😠

I don't face a lot of "much weaker opponents," because I'm not very good ... but I am courteous!

Say "Thanks for the game." "gg" can sound sarcastic or just perfunctory to someone who's still losing blood.

LOL, I think you're right. Rubberjaw, I don't think he was inventing any new acronyms, he was just stunned by your awesome play and meant to say "gg." 😉

Frankly, I'm frustrated by the general lack of sportsmanship in all on-line chess. In correspondence I always greet the player and say good luck. And I always say "good game" after the match. In most cases the opponent ignores me. I also say 'gg' in blitz, and I think I've had my life threatened more often than I've seen 'gg'. It's just common courtesy to say good game after a match. It's sad that so many people don't understand basic sportsmanship.

I completely agree. It's really horrible how antisocial some chess players are online. On uChess and RHP Blitz it's usually not too bad. However, I played a lot on ICC not long ago and while I say hi, almost no one responds back. Likewise after I say gg at the end. If I remark anything else during the game, the other player also suffers from a serious typing disability. Surprisingly, I've had more players outside of the US respond even though English was usually not their native language. It annoys me and I make sure to absolutely destroy them as painfully as possible. For example, by making five Queens when only one is necessary.

"In most cases the opponent ignores me."

I didn't have the slightest idea that 'gg' could be a acronym for 'good game'. And I have had some 'gg' comments that I in my ignorance didn't respond to at all.

There are other acronymes as well, like OTB, CC, TOS, and surely a lot of others acronymes. Why not put them in a glossary in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) file?, so even non-native English speaking members (like myself) can take part of and understand.

Personally, I only say good game if it was particularly enjoyable in some way, perhaps it was unusual, interesting or hard faught.

I often say thanks for the game if i'm in a good mood, or well played if i believe they played well (and beat me).

Apart from meaning 'good game' it could be 'good god', which says something completely different.😉

I think some people can be blatantly extremely rude intentionally. I've just been playing a few blitz games and four people have been rude and critical of my choice of opening, style of play and the fact that I don't resign in positions where counterplay is possible.
I do find it irritating that people feel they can be insulting and hide behind the anonymity of the internet. In general I tell them to get a life and then block contact with them. It is a pity that such idiots exist to play chess.
