Hello All!

I'm new to this site and have and would really appreciate some opinions regarding a certain line in the Ruy Lopez Modern Steinitz Defense. I'm rated about 1500 and am working to improve my Ruy Lopez games when playing white.

My question is: After the moves

1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.Bb5 a6
4.Ba4 d6
5. ? what would be the best continuation: I like Bxc6+ but what are the strengths and weaknesses to this move? Also, any ideas on the following lines would be most helpful.

5.Bxc6+ (I'm particularly interested in opinions regarding this line...is it a "bad" move? Why or why not?)
5.0-0
5.c3
5.d4

Many Thanks,

T.H.

after retaking the knight move d5 after this white has a pretty good position and better pawn formation.

This question might have been asked before but I'm new here and just wanted to get some others' opinions as I'm sure many people here are better players than I am.

When choosing the next move ask yourself the following questions:
Do I want to learn the main line? 0-0
Am I ready to face f5? c3
Is the change of black's pawn structure worth a tempo? Bc6:+ (A tough question indeed)
Do I like to sacricfse a pawn? d4
Do I hate all those pawn structures? c4

bxc6+ is a waste of move if you finished ba4

I don't understand why you would play Ba4, then next move, decide that you want to play Bxc6+. It's a waste of a tempo.

But what black can get from this tempo? They have used it for moving pawn from a7 to a6.

Isn't the difference between the two positions ..d6, and not ..a6, since ..a6 would be included in both positions in question, and ..d6 is not? If the extra tempo is ..a6, there is really nothing to be worry about (I guess, this idea still doesn't make any sense) but clearly ..d6 is a helpful move for black.
