I think it looks rather ugly actually. You can't move your pawns backwards!

After 1 e4 d5 2 e5, 2...c6 is almost guaranteed to cost Black a tempo at some point. After 2...c6, White can play 3 d4, at which point we have a "normal" Advanced Caro-Kann. Nothing wrong with that, except that White gave us a chance to probably equalize after s/he played 2 e5, so I don't see why we shouldn't avail ourselves of the opportunity to get a great game. What I'm trying to say is, 2...c6 ain't bad, but by virtually any viable standard of chess strategy, 2...c5 is much superior, IMO. I also think that 2...Bf5 is also better than 2...c6.
Depending on what white does you might want the pawn on c6. Both are equally flexible and you could move the bishop to g4 later if it will be better there.
Originally posted by gaychessplayerI never offered 2...c6 as a move. My point was that after 2...Bf5 you can play ...c5 later or if you need to you can play ...c6. After 2...Bf5 3...e6 you have a french defense set up with the bishop outside the chain and in the french white can't really stop ...c5 so you might as well hold off on playing it for now knowing you will be able to play it later.
