Yes, 4. ... Qh4+ is sounder and more correct somehow ("the books" give it as best), but if people dare to play 4. f3?! I wonder if they have understood 5. Nc3 is a "must". Therefore I (given the opportunity) play 4. ... Bb4+, "hoping" for an interposing piece on d2, which speeds up the process considerably. And even if White plays 5. Nc3, Black's position is just fine, so why not?

I still hold a 100% score against 4. f3? (including 5. Nc3), so I assume this method is just fine as well. Part of it is that players of 4. f3 are weaker (or less alert) anyway, of course...

I remember the Max Lange full of traps. Lets try a few.

Oh, I have a "nice" Max Lange memory in the archives:

Refute it
Here is the refutation.

I thought the original came from a line like 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Bf5 and Nc6. Is this right or am I thinking of another miniature?

I saw that one. I thought 2. ... Bf5 and Nc6 was another variation. I must be thinking of another miniature.

I once did a review on Avoiding and Creating Opening Traps
by Roman Dzindzichasvili at

http://www.chessville.com/Chandler/videorev.htm

I even busted one of the well known traps he was showing.

His trap v the Alekhine's (I show it in the review) is well worth knowing.
I have picked up a few scalps at Blitz with it.

Not tried it OTB yet as there I favour 1.e4 Nf6 2.f3! e5? 3.f4!! and get
a pure reversed Latvian.
This is an amazing line Black thinks you are an idiot and over sacs.

Years ago I saw a couple different authors on 1.a3. Rogers in Winning With The Elephant said 1. a3 e5 2. e4 Nf6 3. d4 was super for white. It avoids a critical line with Bb4 +.
Myers was the other one I think. He liked 1.a3 e5 2.e4 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 4.exd5 Nxd5 5.Qh5 with a Steinitz Scotch (and no Nb4).
Maybe 1.a3 is an improved Latvian too. 🙂

Actually 1.a3 is not an improvement.

I'm not being funny, there is a line where the Black King
has to seek safety by getting his King to a6.

Playing the same line in reverse, the King runs across to the Queenside
and suddenly finds a pawn on a3 - Whoops!
