If this were true, why isn't the kings gambit more popular in the upper levels of chess.
Check out the games of GM's Short, Federov, Morozevich, Adams, Gallagher, Spassky etc etc...
Thing is, GM's are happy to play with a slight advantage in the opening as white leading to a won endgame. The reasoning is, why play a risky or sharp gambit when you can accumulate this slight advantage in a Ruy or Sicilian Najdorf without a material deficit?
I find this thread really useful, and the article shoud be really interesting.
I find it harder to win as black, for me i tend to go into a defensive mode as black and find it much harder to win from that psychological postion!
I need i think to move my mind set to adopt a postion of attack as well as always defending.
I play the scandinavian mainly as black, but nearly always get stuck in a defensive mire with it!
Any thoughts on the above?

I am writing an article about what it takes to win with the black pieces... My point is to ask you guys what you think of the whole White vs Black debate. "Win with white, draw with black" is a phrase I've heard many times and I want to know what you think of this.
Before the game begins, there is a balance. Each player is exerting the same force on the board. When White makes his first move, they obtain an advange, because White is not exerting more force. It is Black's job to neutralize that force which White's move obtained, and thus return the game to a balanced state. If both players played perfectly, then after every move by Black, there would be a balance. Thus black is always playing catch-up, and may not ever have the initiative.
Now we know that this is all theory, but on a GM level, this becomes a reality.
To answer the question, to win with Black, White must lose the initiative. In other words, White must allow Black to shift the balance in Black's favor, and thus require White to play catch-up. White can lose the initiative by a major blunder or simply by making a pointless move.
Consider boxing. If I strike first and continue to carefully strike repeatedly, my oponent must commit his resources to defending. As soon as I stop punching or throw a wide punch that he does not have to defend against, he can now start to attack me, and he has gained an advantage.
For the average player, having White does not provide an advantage, because the initiative changes hands throughout the game with almost every move. But with GM play, the initiative is a covitted thing because it allows the player to dictate the direction.
Originally posted by mipmcptIn that system (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd6) black have good counter play and white cant find sure way to get advantage. Also that system is still less investigated (compare with Sicilian lines or Scandinavian with 3...Qa5)
Why is it the most poular line ,i know korch that you favour this line when playing the scandinavian, why is this?
