You have a weird sense of humour (recommending that to a beginner, that is) 😀

Hi AJ!

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for here? Are you looking for a good opening to learn or are you looking for traps in the openings themselves?

For a beginner I would recommend the italian game as white. You'll suffer some losses at first, but if you study your games and maybe run them through a chess engine, you will rapidly increase your tactical ability.
As black,go with 1....,e5 2....,Nc6,or 2....,Nf6,then it depends on what your oppo does. You'll get lots of tactics early on.It's what you need to learn most of all 🙂

You guys are talking about 1. f4? A02: Bird's Opening?

Here's my favorite variation:

1. f4 b6 2. b3 Bb7 3. Bb2 Nf6 4. e3 g6 5. Nf3 Bg7 6. g3 0-0 7. Bg2 c5 8. 0-0 Nc6 9. a4 d6 10. Na3 a6 11. Qe2 Rb8 12. d3...

Yes...the opening book goes out that far. And the cool part is the game is pretty much exactly even here -okay...not perfect...maybe down to a couple centipawns...- So if two players were to play the board from here. You should be able to tell the better player.
