1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5? 5.Nb5 Nf6 6.Bg5 Be7 7.Bxf6 gxf6 8.Bc4 a6 9.N5c3 0-0 10.Bd3 Nc6 11.Nd5 Be6 12.Nbc3 b5 13.Qh5. Rc8 14.0-0-0 Qa5 15.Kb1 b4 16.Ne2 Bd8 17.Ng3! I like this move obviously and the plan will be clear in the next few moves 17... Nd4? black is oblivious to what's going on and continues on with his own doomed plan trying to break through on the queen side via c2 18.Qh6 Bg4 now black sees his demise as this isn't an attack on the rook but rather a defense of the h5 square 19.f3 here h3 for an exchange sac is good also but I chose to do save material just in case I was missing something since I had not much time left on the clock 19... b3 20.axb3 Nxc2?? When I saw this move I was just thinking "thank you very much for the knight... One less defender for you" 21. Bxc2 Qc5 22.Bd3 f5 this needs to be played eventually to stave off mate I think he was hoping for a time win 23.fxg4 f6 24.Nxf5 just look how dominating the knights are while both bishops have been bad the whole game 24... Rf7 25.Bc4 Kh8? Oh no! He might have got that time win he wanted if he had only played Qxc4 but now mate is forced 26.Nde7 Bxe7 27.Bxf7 Qc2+ 28.Ka2 Qxb2+ 29.Kxb2 Rg8 30.Bxg8 Kxg8 31.Qg7# my only check the whole game and its mate 1-0

Not too easy but features many bishop, knight and queen sac, great games from Anderssen, Fischer, Kasparov, Alekhine, Morphy etc. And of course, Tal. Reading that book made ME Sacrifice clan number 1 ! I am better than you 😛 (just joking, anyway)
The knight is my favorite piece.... There are so many devilish tactics it is involved in.... The knight has been the center piece for most of my "brilliant" sacs.
Originally posted by ivan2908I'll look it up but I have more experience sacrificing than all them combined 😛 ( just joking, anyway)

This combination is quite famous and I've seen it a few times
in various books.
Was it from a game or composed (Capablanca's name is being
suggested by my fading grey cells).
This may be one for Swiss Gambit - he's good at finding out these things.
Under Promotion Useless Fact No3.
Raymond Keene once promoted to a Bishop in a serious game
for an experiment to see how many magazines and newspapers
got it right. a1=B+ (it was going to get taken next move no matter
what he chose). I think he said only BCM got it correct.
Originally posted by greenpawn34I've seen a number of chess engines underpromote to a knight when the promoted piece will be captured on the next move. (Always entertaining to see it happen.) I guess the engine thinks it's losing less material by only letting a knight be captured instead of a bishop, rook, or queen.

Originally posted by greenpawn34I found one source that actually gave the composer's name. This position is attributed to Emanuel Lasker, 1900:

The knight has a very special place in the game. If you examine the technique of under-promoting to a knight to draw against a rook you wonder if this is the mysterious reason for the creation of the knight in the universe.
Learn the basics: KBN v K, KR v KN, etc. and your question will be answered. Of course, reading How to Reassess Your Chess by Silman will enlighten you too.
