why does it seem illogical that I should have a friend?

We enjoyed a fine battle across the chessboard and I have had respect for him as a player and a person since that time.

Ok, so what's gonna happen now? Blitz? How many games?

Obviously Topalov's not gonna replay game 5, he needs to win just to get an overall draw.

Not playing a game and leave walkover is not in the spirit of chess.
Walkover is always a loss.

Fischer did it in 2nd game in Reykjavik 1972. He didn't run the next WCC-match some years after and lost his title. Does he whine now?
No, he took his loss as a man.

There will be 4 rapid games 25mins per player then if still tied 2 blitz games 5 mins per player - if still no winner one game
White 6 minutes v Black 5 minutes winner is World Champion and if a draw then Black wins the title

Topalov already won game 5, it was Kramnik's decision to let his clock fall. Game 5 now belongs in the past, it cannot be played out of sequence as Kramnik could now play Game 5 for a draw, which would suit his style. It would only be fair to play Game 5 if it was followed by games 6,7,8,9,10,11,and 12
Lets enjoy the quicker chess and support the winner, whichever man that is

if topalov wins the blitz session then he can try to claim legitimacy - but only very few people will recognise him, his victory would be laughed at by most of the world. he would be just one of many people claiming to have been the champ over the past few years - this match will be seen just as much a victory for kramnik - maybe more so.

if topalov wins the blitz, then plays game 5 and wins, then he gains uncompromised legitimacy - and becomes the true champ ... and becomes the first universally recognised king of chess in a long long time.

A lot of rewriting of history is being done by Topalov apologists. Suffice to say, that Topalov refused to restart the match with the score 3:1 which was the legitimate result of the CHESS. So, Kramnik agreed to continue to play UNDER PROTEST.

As far as I'm concerned, Kramnik has won the match and retained his title regardless of the outcome of some rapid games against a player who has one less win in the match.

If it comes to that, how do they decide who should get 6 mins/5 mins?

They draw lots or flip a coin or some random means. It's absurd.

They have to play Game 5 and the winner gets Black
