Game 1071644

Mate is forced from 27. Qe8. At the time I didn't have a complete knowledge of how I would mate but I thought there must be one somewhere. There was. The game follows it until 32. ... Kf4?. If the longer line had been played 32. ... Kd2 33. Qd3+ 34. Ke1 Rc1#.

Mating the black king on e1 can't be something that happens often.

I dunno. For me, the moves I try to make fall into one of three categories:

I. The move most likely to irritate my opponent.

If I can't find a good, irritating move, then I fall back to:

II. The move that most improves my pieces' mobility. Without mobilities, there are no possibilities (I think some chess maven said that).

And if I can't find I or II, I fall back to III:

III. I make the move least likely to damage my own position.

And when I get down to III, I _have_ been tempted to break out the dice, on occasion! III occurs in the _really hard_ games where finding a good move is like pounding your head against the pavement.

Sorry Bowmann,

It's a baseball term for a pitch thrown very fast and up and towards the batters head. It's so the pitcher can back the batter off the plate.
