It's called a head, inside the head is a brain.
On the front of the head are two eyes.

You use the eyes to look at the board and the postiton of the pieces
is relayed to the brain.

The brain will think.

Now at first some of you will get scared of this new sensation ...[text shortened]... e before 1980.

Give it try.

(if you don't have a brain buy HeinzKat's - it's unused).
I like that. Very well put.🙂

Deep Blue is the strongest engine ever. But it took a Grandmaster overseeing the moves to beat the great Kasparov! And he never really recovered did he. A shame. IBM cheated and deceived the world.....😏

Brains are more reliable, they don't go out during a power cut.

(also not one of these things are capable of an original idea).

Take the Evans Gambit.
We have all been entertained by games playing this line.

Yet switch a box for on 5 years it would never come up with 4.b4

Think how dry and tepid chess would have been if we had had computers
before Morphy.
We would never have the beauty of chess.
We would never have guessed that underneath all this exact dry play lurks
so many beautiful games showing the human mind at it's most creative.

🙂

If you elect to play with a time control that allows a 4 day safari then you
are playing with a time control that allows a 4 day safari.

The solution appears to be, don't play with a time control that allows
a 4 day safari.

Some guys have a life outside of RHP (the lucky ones).

Reliability is exactly what you don't want. An engine will spot every single mistake you make and pounce on it. It will never make a tactical mistake for you pounce on. Your only chance to defeat thing is to have positional understanding akin to Karpov or Adams and squeeze the life out of the thing. Being beaten every time is really depressing and you will learn very little from the experience.

If you need a good chess partner but want something available at any time then visit eBay and look for chess computers rather than software. Ignore the modern contraptions that will cost several arms and legs and beat you silly at the drop of a hat. Old Tandy/Radio Shack machines are good, my favourite is the 1750L - it is portable, plays sensible moves but will make mistakes that look similar to the sort of oversights that a human might make and can often be bought for very little.

A fair point I shall adjust my `Safari` settings. Good man. 😀

Cheers I will have a look. What do you think of the Excalibur? It doubles as a classic-standalone chessboard as well, bit pricey but seems a good investment eh...

don't listen to greenpawn. If you use the two eyes in front of your head and learn to rely on them you will suck at blindfold chess. Best is to play as a blind, deaf, mute person. Only then will you realize your true potential.

edit: get Crafty or Fruit, they are free engines. Get a GUI to use them with.
