Originally posted by Grandmousterhave I ever claimed I was anything but a beginner? -no. I don't pretend to be anything I'm not. I blitz at 1029 FICS (wormstar), standard at 1381 FICS, CC at 1520 RHP. those are facts, nothing to do with self esteem. actually I think it's pretty ok for playing 6 months now. and I'm not the one trying to convince strangers I'm hundreds of points higher than my current rating here.
But seeing as you are a true patzer, with your 1000 blitz rating, i can only laugh...
I see there are plenty of experts here on a persons ability.
Snide little comments wont detract me.
As for being realistic, i have peaked at expert ratings in 15 min, 3 min, and 5 min chess on ICC. Against the best online chess players in the world.
I have beaten titled players on the internet, and OTB.
I take lessons, and liten to strong players when they offer advice.
Most of my post are defence postering against the bitter ramblings of the lower rated players, and some 20% ers.
So realisticly, its I who will advance to higher levels, while some who can only espouse "sour grapes" will be left behind
Originally posted by GrandmousterWell, I would do that, Grandmouster, but I only make my moves in a 30 minute time limit on the computer in the Newport Public Library in Oregon. I also still do not believe that blitz is real chess. That's why they call it blitz and standard is called standard. Blitz is not skill. It's quick tactical psych-outs which in the end do not prove real chess strength. Like I have said before, I've seen very weak players have 1800 ratings on Yahoo because they cheat with programs or they just simply are very good at tactical psych-outs and gaining time on their opponent. When it comes to deep combinations and real OTB standard play, they suddenly crumble under the pressure and usually move too fast... etc...
If your making assumtions about my rating, be prepared to back it up with an action. We can play a few blitz games, at say yahoo, or ICC, or any free chess server.
Then, if im just 1600 as you say, i should win about 60% of my games.
If im 1800+ as my current blitz rating is, then i should win 80-90% (or 100😵 of my games.
But if your to hung up on ratings, as is your good friend, powerless, or something, then dont bother..😀

I agree that blitz is not the best chess around. What makes it hard, is the reaction, and quick analysis the mind has to make in the shortest possible time.
Speed chess is junk food, and slow is meat and potatos.
But its also a gauge of chess knowledge, and reflexes, as you have to make a snap decision based on the database in your head.
And for pure fun, and adrenilin, nothing beats a good game of blitz

Originally posted by RahimKIt suprises me that you think taking chess lessons is sad, I have to admit the idea has crossed my mind, on the plus side my thoughts are well I have paid for tennis and golf lessons in the past why not chess? if it speeds up the learning process it can't be a bad thing. On the negative side I know that I am too busy to put enough time in to analyse and study myself and have thought there are no short cuts so I should make the time and do it myself (it's easy to think there is a magical answer...but the truth is there never is), and this is my stance at the moment, realizing I have to make more time for (self) study. But I wouldn't criticise someone for taking lessons, this isn't a personal attack on you I am genuinely interested as to why you say that? Don't you have a thread going yourself giving lessons to lower rated players? (if it's ok for you teach say players 500 points below you, do you not think someone rated 500 points above you could teach you a thing or two?
