let's not forget rubberjaw30,
every game that guy lost was because his eyes were closed and the FBI was threatening him if he didn't throw the game.
🙂
Weyerstrass can be beaten; simply nobody has done it on this site yet. He could have been beaten in the games below. I know I have posted a few of these long ago.
Game 1783702
Game 2801920 Qxe6??
Game 1397460
Now, in these games below, I do not think that Weyerstrass was ever losing but his play is very resourceful.
Game 685913
Game 1131346
And a few other impressive games:
Game 1123112
Game 1682902
I have enjoyed analyzing some of the games of Weyerstrass’s; I am particularly intrigued by the skill of making fortresses and he clearly is very skilled at doing so; additionally he plays the QID, and some of his opening ideas may be applicable for my games as I am also a QID player.
It is very difficult for me to make judgments on his play as his chess understanding surely is far superior than that of any other player on this site. I will not go as far to say that he is stronger than engines. He has beaten banned engine users; you must understand that the banned users that have played here and who have played Weyerstrass do not always choose the first choice move and thus are generally more likely to choose worse moves so that accounts in part for his success against such users. The late IronMan31 is the only “pure” engine user I have games analyzed for – and so you can draw parallels between Weyerstrass’s and Fritz’s (IronMan31’s) performance here. (I know that Ironman31 used his engine solely and not his brain as I do post-game analysis with Fritz and have played against Fritz so many times…and he used Fritz for every move. Notably, he used opening systems which Fritz could play well with.).
Anyway, to a much more interesting topic, Weyerstrass does have CC credentials, he drew Van Oosterom (the current CC champion – albeit, his play in his loss in the recent CC championship to Nickel appears shameful and I have no respect for ICCF chess in the engine age) and Euwe (former OTB World Champion) - both draws in 1980 in correspondence chess – you can see some of his games at chesslive.de database. He received the ICCF IM title before the engine age, I believe. I recall that he drew Lev Alburt in a simultaan (game can be seen on chessgames), but I do not know of any other OTB game of his of note. I do not think it is very surprising that he has not lost a game here because he has not received many challenges to test his ability. He makes mistakes but they are generally more subtle and not so bad!
However, with regard to chess understanding, I would rate in this order: Weyerstrass, Stephane, David Tebb, Northern Lad, Quirine. I know that the latter four are/were very strong players OTB. Quirine won the site championships twice so of course he makes the list. Also cludi, ilywrin, Mephisto2, Korch are clearly strong human players and they do post in the fora upon occasion.
I know I left some very strong, legitimate players out of my list – so I apologize –such as Gatecrasher – who calculates very deeply – so in CC, tactically perhaps stronger than the players above and is an exceptional, legitimate player – but I am not sure if he is quite the same caliber as Tebb for instance strategically or “positionally” – but I do not like that term - "positionally". I suppose one can argue that strategy is long-term tactics, but strategy requires understanding beyond calculating variations or combination play.
This is merely a (rather long) opinion with regards to who I feel have the very best chess understanding on this site based on analysis of games of the top players here. Although I think I am proficient at analysis, I know I am commentating on players who are stronger than me and I have not provided much support or analysis for my opinion, but I feel it to tedious to do so here ( although I do and have enjoyed the analysis I have done! ) , so take it for what it is worth.
Yuga,
Interesting post. I have a question though... What's wrong with
Game 2801920 Qxe6??
To me that looks like the best move. It screws up white's pawn structure and leaves white with nothing much to do.
I'm probably missing something. Thanks.
