I want to know why you continue playing chess?
I spend an average of 2 hours each day on it, playing and studying. I know a lot of you spend just as much time or more on chess.
Why do you spend so much time on it? What will chess do for you? What has chess done for you so far?
it's an intellectual challenge to win, because I like victories ,even though they are so small victories compared to struggles in real life
one side of me says that chess is a waste of time, that I'll never become a good player, that you cannot make a living by playing chess
the other side of me says that chess is a challenge, that life is like a chess game and that you can learn and make better choices in real life owing to your mistakes in a chess game.
chess has done nothing good for me so far, except fun and meeting nice people
I hope that chess will give me something good,a victory in a tournament, friends, money (why not),that chess will make me smarter, mentally stronger, and so on...

I see chessboards in my dreams.
Yeah, chess, or rather the enthusiasm for it, has kinda ruined my life. I went through two divorces because of it. I could never find a lady to live with who would 'allow' me to play in chess tournaments on the weekends. So I left the bitches! ðŸ˜

Originally posted by RahimKFor me chess is the Game of games, and I'm a gamer. I kind of quit all other kinds of games (computer games etc) because chess is rich enough. Ok, chess doesn't give me better physical condition (but I play football), but to amuse and stimulate the mind, it gives quite nice coverage. The nice combination of strategy/tactics, static/dynamic and permanent/non-permanent moves makes a game complex enough to play the role of entertainer/stimulator. I think I'm saying it's high up to the ceiling (I'm not planning on becoming 2800+ soon) and it's something one can grow in and probably have fun at every stage. But it's not only the gaming part. I personally think chess is somewhat artistic aswell. Obviously, the world champions have had different styles, yet they were playing the same game.

And well, chess is always a good thing. If you're on a long travel you can think about a position even without a board. You really need nothing and you can do it anytime you want. How many hobbies are like that?
I spend time on it, and not always playing. I do enjoy reading about chess, and not necessarily annoted games. So there's also other dimensions except from playing the game. I don't think so many football players read theory books or history of football..
I'm aware of that I didn't exactly answer you question. But, to put it simply, it has given me hours of fun and will give me more =)
