Ive played on yahoo quite a bitand i dont find it all that bad.Ive also played on chessbase but find Im waiting for an opponent alot. The number of people that play on yahoo every night is in the neighbourhood of 10,000.That means that most people of any rating should not have trouble finding a game.Admittedly there are alot of shenannagins going on there, so if its an acurate rating your looking for yahoo isnt the best place for it. Chess base detects people using software and erases their rating so this is a good feature.
I have Playchess.com subscription that came with Fritz 8.0. There are alot of grandmasters who play regularly on Playchess. In particular, it always seems that Nigel Short is playing on Playchess. You can sit in on his games, which is really cool. Also, I occasionally see Yasser Seirawan (the real one!) on there.
I occasionally play a game on Playchess; however, the players seem to be way above me (even in the beginner's room). I am always getting beat badly. I have yet to win a game there.
One advantage of Playchess (if you own Fritz) is that the games are automatically databased into Chessbase format. This makes it pretty easy to do postgame analysis with Fritz.
I have not used ICC but would be interested in any comments from users who have used both ICC and Playchess. My Playchess subscription will be up in another couple of months and I am trying to decide whether to re-up or switch to another live chess site such as ICC.
Originally posted by riskdocI paid for ICC for 5 1/2 years, then let my subscription expire. Now I play on FICS for my quick fix, and playchess when I want to get serious. Since the latest update of blitzen (ICC GUI), I've played a few games as a guest. I mlearned that I miss it, but not enough for the price.

I also play a couple of 15 - 20 minute games on Chess Hall of Fame Live most weeks (sometimes more).
You can read my assessments of several sites at

You can fi Wulebgr at any of these sites to see if I've played enough games to make my evaluations worthwhile. If the fi command does not work, the site is fecal.

Thanks for the information! I went to your website and found it to be very informative🙂

Strange that uchess hasn't been mentioned in this thread!?
Uchess works well and has a lot of good players, with a simple but effective interface.
Unfortunately Russ seems to have given up on developing the site, the number of active players is gradually falling and the uchess link has been removed from the links at the bottom of the rhp pages 🙁
Theres just no comparison, ICC is the best place to play on the net.
Its designed for serious players, weak or strong.
Last time I went to yahoo, I tried for about 20 min to get a game, but no one came to my table. Waste of time...
Tried Playchess, but the lag sucks, my screen freezes after every game. Dont know if its a resouces drain, or because their servers are in germany?
The best way to descrbe playing on Yahoo vs. a pay site like ICC, is simply...You Get What You Pay For!
Originally posted by warriorking1972You would think. The problem is that at Yahoo you must go into a "room" that usually contains no more than 100 people. Instead of the thousands of people on the site, you must find a game with someone in the same room. If you are on a chess server like ICC or FICS you can start a game with anyone who is there. You can also have your games automatically saved in PGN format, watch chess lectures and follow chess events, play chess variants all in an atmosphere that is almost free of "shenanigans". Considering you can play at FICS for free, why in the world would you continue to play at Yahoo?
